Modern worship music has become a distinct sub-genre, with predictable sounds (big guitars, mighty-lunged vocal) and content (fervent praise for the Savior.) The Michael Gungor Band adheres to the second of these two conventions while taking creative liberties with the first; musically he and his bandmates explore a wider range of sonic textures than most current worship bands have attempted. The group achieves a pleasing blend of ‘60’s pop, old and contemporary rock elements, counterpointing atmospheric techno touches with luminous guitars, and choir-like background vocals. Highlights in this vein include “Grace For Me” (almost baroque feel), “Fly” (reminiscent of Paul McCartney’s acoustic style, “You Alone” (delicate with keyboards replicating Strawberry Fields Forever.)
